What I learned from my daughter, Elyssa

26 Mar

So here I am with very much delay post but I guess it’s never too late.My lil one turns 2 years old on last 30thJan2017 and we had small celebration with closest family member.

Time flies and I never knew that this little one will bring so much of changes in my life. Often we talk about on how and what we are going to teach our kid but we don’t talk about on what we have learned and still learning from our kid.

Below are the few things that I learn from her.

  • Be in the moment
A toddler would be the best person to teach mindfulness. It’s amazing to watch a little kid having fun. They play happily and nothing around them matters. They’re not thinking about what they’re going to have for lunch or what to wear to the family wedding dinner. Kids live in the moment.Kids don’t waste any time worrying about things when something doesn’t work out or they don’t get frustrated, in short they don’t worry on the things they have no control. They might get disappointed for a while but not even for 5 minutes and they can immediately move on to do the next thing that makes them happy.Yes,once you’re living in the moment, you have the benefit of experiencing life with a ‘beginner’s mind.’ This means you get to experience the excitement of doing something for the first time every single day. And to add on,many of us busy capturing moments with our smart phone, try putting away your phone, instead of looking at the memory you have captured try living the moment.Even your kid would love to have you to enjoy the moment
  • Persistent
No matter how many times, she fall down when she started to walk, she will immediately rise up and keep trying with the same amount of effort. This has taught me that if you want something badly enough it’s worth going after. Whether this means crying, bargaining, pleading, or even stomping your feet, sometimes you need to have the strength to not back down. Even if someone is standing in the way of making your desire a reality, a little conviction is sometimes all you need to break down that barrier.
  • Let your emotions flow
Elyssa can go from laughing hysterically, to crying and screaming, to laughing again in a matter of minutes. She expresses her emotions as she feels them, so she’s never at risk of keeping them pent-up inside. She doesn’t know about holding a grudge, and the longest she can stay angry with someone is few seconds. When I’m angry on her and scolds her,the first thing she does is run towards me and request me to carry her and she fully expects that no matter what I’ve been feeling, I’ll be happy just like that by carrying her. Keeping our emotions bottled up has been proven to be unhealthy, yet it’s a habit most of us have. It’s always good to let the emotion flow so that we feel so much better and feel lighter and ready for the next. When we hold on tight, we get heavy. When we release, we get lighter.
  • Don’t bother about what others think
Most kids couldn’t care less what others think of them; while most of us adults care way too much. My daughter will wear anything, say anything, do anything as long as it feels good to her.Do you ever wonder how you’d live your life if no one was watching. It’s impossible to live up to everyone’s expectations. There will always be people no matter what we say or how we treat them, they will still judge us.So why bother? Trust yourself and do what makes you happy.
  • Be brave
Yes, I learn to be brave to do things that I wants to do.My little one do not fear and do what she likes to do without thinking on the consequences. They are brave to try new things. what about us? We often think a lot to do new things and most of time, negative issues. What if this happen? What if that happen? Can i do this? Where do i start ? So many questions and eventually these FEAR will stop of us doing what we wants to try.Lets be brave to try.You never know until you TRY !

To my dear little Elyssa, Amma would like to thank you for all the happiness and lesson that you are giving.I believe there is a lot more to learn and lets grow together !

When the daddy took for hair cut

4 Mar

For the past two weeks, Elyssa health was not in a good condition. She was having fever for two days and followed by cough and phlegm. Took her to clinic and currently she has no fever but still suffers with flu and cough.

Unlike the mother, Elyssa is blessed with beautiful hair which grows fast and at the same she sweats a lot..yes, like A LOT and thanks to the current climate which makes it even worse. She looks like she had a hair wash every time she sweats and this definitely worsen her flu.

So we decided, to get her hair cut so that she will recover soon and feels more comfortable.  And these time daddy wanted the daughter to have same hair style with him. As usual with much drama during the hair cut, we managed to get the hair cut.

While looking at her, I told myself ” So this is how my son looks like if I ever have one “. Despite loving her new hair cut, I still miss her long beautiful hair” ..Thank God hair grows 🙂 .

Hoping my little princess recover soon !

Happy 1st Birthday Elyssa ! 30012016

9 Feb

Its been delayed post, however I guess it’s better late than never. A year ago on 30th January 2015, I was so nervous to embark in motherhood but I was even more nervous about having to push a whole baby out of me. I still can’t forget the rehearsal session by the doctor on how to push and the moment doctor said ” Ok, you are ready to push ” , I felt like I’m going to faint. After 17 hours, finally I had my little one with me. You arrived at the perfect time and you gave tough year a truly bright spot. Your brought so much joy to outr lives. You truly our sunshine!

Tapioca Masala Vadai

Tapioca Masala Vadai

Ingredients
A
1 tapioca, grated and squeeze out excess water
1 big onion ( chopped )
few curry leaves ( chopped )
1 green chili ( chopped )

B
1 dry chili
1 inch ginger
1 teaspoon fennel seeds

C
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
salt to taste

Blend ingredients in B to a rough paste. Then add A and B ingredients to the blended paste. Heat oil (to check if the oil is hot enough to drop the vadas, add a small pinch of batter, if it raises to the surface immediately , then that is the right stage to fry the vadas). Take a small lemon sized ball of the mix, flatten it with your hands and gently slip it into the oil.

Keep in medium heat and fry the vadas both sides till golden brown and crisp. Repeat the same procedure for the rest of the mix. (The number of vada you add to the oil depends on the quantity of oil you heat)

Bread Pudding

9 Apr

Nothing beats warm bread pudding on a cold or rainy night. There are some decadent versions out there but I like to stick with fast and tasty and this is the basic way to make bread pudding.

400ml  Whole milk
5 Eggs
110gm Sugar
1/2 tablespoon vanilla essence
1/4 cup raisins (optional)
Butter

  • Preaheat oven to 150 degrees C.
  • Evenly butter each of the slices of bread on both sides.
  • Place a layer of the buttered bread on the bottom of the dish, slightly overlapping each other.
  • Sprinkle raisins evenly across the bread for the second layer.
  • Continue layering bread  until all the bread is used.
  • Beat together the milk, eggs and vanilla.
  • Pour this mixture on top of the layered breads.
  • Allow to stand for 30 minutes so the liquid is fully absorbed.
  • Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until top is golden brown.

Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream or fresh fruit.  Run to the supermarket and get yourself a fresh loaf so you can whip up this delicious treat.

My Valentine

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s Day to my dearest husband ,Ramesh Kumar ! ! I am so blessed to be able to call him my husband for the rest of my life. The past 13+ years that we’ve shared together have been the best.

At Cameron Highlnad
His continual care for me in any circumstance is amazing. I always know that I have him there to talk to, be there for me whenever I need it and even to help me finish my sentences .We’ve learned to read each other’s moods and whims, to support each other through life’s challenges, to be each other’s biggest fan, and – when necessary – most honest critic.  You’re always encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone and cheering me on to do things I didn’t think I could do.

He is funny :)
I am also so grateful to have his sense of humor in my life. I don’t know what I would do without it! I tell him this often, but his sense of humor is a lot like my dad’s, which is a good thing. I never get tired of it and it never fails to make me laugh all the time.

Ramesh, you are such a gift to me. I couldn’t have asked for a better man for God to place in my life as my husband. Thank you so much for your continual care and love for me. Thank you for your silliness that will always make me laugh. And most of all, thank you for your hard work and patience. You are so wonderful to me.

Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart and I love you so much, David Ramesh Kumar

Your wife,
Shil

Thank you 2012 !

New year or not, pattern of events in life shall remain much the same, with possibly no escape from the dualities of existence. Pray, we develop enough inner strength to accept all events in life with great composure.

Here’s wishing you and your family a very happy and prosperous Year 2013!

My new hobby – Stone Painting

27 Dec

Due to the boredom strikes ,I tried painting on rocks and I am hooked, it is so fun and easy !!!

This craft is super great for kids, too. It’s the perfect creative project for them to enjoy doing outside, on a nice day.

Searching for “just the perfect stone” becomes a fun activity, in and of itself ! The shape of a stone makes me to think of the perfect thing to paint on it, like a penguin that goes along with the round contours of the stone. Sometimes I already have a picture in mind before I start searching and I just need to find the right shape stone to be my canvas.

I use acrylic paints since they are the ideal medium for use with stones, as they dry quickly and very durable.
And  this is how I do,

  1. First I soak the stones in soapy water and then scrub to remove any dirt. Let dry.
  2. Then I paint the stone with gesso and let them dry.
  3. I sketch the picture.
  4. Then I paint the outline of the picture with a dark colour. For example if you are painting an owl, then use a dark brown.
  5. Then I complete painting the entire picture and let dry
  6. Lastly, spray varnish / clear to protect as well as to make the stone look glossy. In my case, my hubby will do this step. Lucky me 🙂

So, this is my first go at stone painting , Christmas themed

Cute penguins on stone

So what can I do with my painted stones

  • Painted stones make great gifts
  • Nestled in plants
  • Employed as a paper -weight
  • Used as festival / holiday decor
  • Door stoppers
  • Simply tabletop decorations

I hope I have inspired you guys to go paint a stone !
