My new hobby – Stone Painting

27 Dec

Due to the boredom strikes ,I tried painting on rocks and I am hooked, it is so fun and easy !!!

This craft is super great for kids, too. It’s the perfect creative project for them to enjoy doing outside, on a nice day.

Searching for “just the perfect stone” becomes a fun activity, in and of itself ! The shape of a stone makes me to think of the perfect thing to paint on it, like a penguin that goes along with the round contours of the stone. Sometimes I already have a picture in mind before I start searching and I just need to find the right shape stone to be my canvas.

I use acrylic paints since they are the ideal medium for use with stones, as they dry quickly and very durable.
And  this is how I do,

  1. First I soak the stones in soapy water and then scrub to remove any dirt. Let dry.
  2. Then I paint the stone with gesso and let them dry.
  3. I sketch the picture.
  4. Then I paint the outline of the picture with a dark colour. For example if you are painting an owl, then use a dark brown.
  5. Then I complete painting the entire picture and let dry
  6. Lastly, spray varnish / clear to protect as well as to make the stone look glossy. In my case, my hubby will do this step. Lucky me 🙂

So, this is my first go at stone painting , Christmas themed

So what can I do with my painted stones

  • Painted stones make great gifts
  • Nestled in plants
  • Employed as a paper -weight
  • Used as festival / holiday decor
  • Door stoppers
  • Simply tabletop decorations

I hope I have inspired you guys to go paint a stone !
